Ancylostoma duodenale egg from faecal preparation 60 x 40 microns - saline preparation. The eggs are usually in the early cleavage stage when passed in the faeces. They are oval with broadly rounded ends and have a clear space between the developing embryo and the thin egg shell. This hookworm of humans has a prepatent development of several weeks to several months; infections are diagnosed by finding eggs in the faeces. For travellers to endemic areas, it is very important to know the time interval between the travel and test and know the incubation time for the parasites to ensure the test is performed at a suitable time to detect the parasitic infection for a correct diagnosis to be made.
